Open Hand Update | 3500 Clients each Week

APRIL 10, 2020 UPDATE

Open Hand continues to focus and optimize its schedule of operations to provide emergency and shelf-stable meals to 3500 Atlanta-area clients, a majority of whom are food insecure and medically fragile. We are committed to ensuring clients have the nutrition they need over an extended period of time with boxes of shelf-stable and frozen meals.

Open Hand’s shelf-stable menus are nutritionally balanced with controlled carbohydrates, reduced sodium, and limited fat to prevent or manage conditions that are common in the older adult population, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.

Shelf-stable meals include soups, pastas, fruit and nut mixes, and so much more. They are approximately 600 calories each and are delivered as boxes with either 2, 5, or 7 meals per box.

Emergency frozen meals provide a streamlined and limited menu of wholesome foods including lean proteins, low-fat dairy, whole grains, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. From lasagna with sugar snap peas, to chicken with flame-roasted corn and black beans, meals are portion-controlled and plant-rich, providing fiber, vitamins, and minerals for client well-being. Meals are composed to provide 400 to 600 calories with a focus on variety, amount and nutrition to support healthy eating for everyone during these emergency circumstances.

Open Hand’s emergency frozen meals are delivered with 5, 7, 10, 14, and 21 meals per box.
