Open Hand Hosts Garden Party for Fulton County Seniors

By: Open Hand Atlanta

As part of Older Americans Month in May, Open Hand Atlanta celebrated Fulton County seniors in style by hosting its annual Senior Garden Party in collaboration with United Healthcare.

Open Hand provides freshly cooked medically-tailored meals, combined with snacks or supplements, to meet the daily nutrition needs of low-income men, women and children who are dealing with a chronic disease in addition to home-bound seniors and disabled individuals. In Fulton County alone, Open Hand serves 14 senior centers and delivered 39,164 meals to Fulton County seniors during the month of May 2019.

The Senior Garden Party is a daytime celebration featuring nutrition education as well as bingo, lunch, music, and dancing to honor and appreciate older Fulton County residents. It is a time for older adults to enjoy themselves, connect with each other, and simply let loose and have a good time. The May 18 event this year occurred at The Foundry at Puritan Mill and featured live music and line dancing by longtime favorite group, The Beulah Boys. Seniors received fresh flowers and produce as gifts to take home as well.

Because older adults can often feel forgotten or isolated, events like the Senior Garden Party provide a sense of community, as well as an opportunity to feel seen and appreciated. The event also provides an open atmosphere to celebrate spring in full bloom and space to be physically active and enjoy a healthy meal.

According to the Administration on Aging, events like Open Hand’s Senior Garden Party are instrumental for supporting and valuing older adults in our communities, but there are other ways throughout the year to connect with seniors:

Good Measure Meals is the social enterprise of Open Hand Atlanta, meaning 100% of net proceeds from every purchase directly benefits neighbors in need – like older adults in Fulton County – through the work of Open Hand.
